La Marseillaise, written by a soldier named Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle, was adopted by Revolutionary troops before being declared France's national anthem in 1795. Before you go to Paris, get ahold of a recording of the anthem, and listen to the song (don't worry, we'll help you out with the words).
